You Can Register Without a Passport
Many people hear "Binance is an international platform" and immediately assume a passport is required to register. That's actually not the case. Binance supports multiple types of identification documents for identity verification, and a passport is just one of them. For most Chinese users, a national ID card is all you need.
Today we'll clear this up so you know what documents to use for registration and verification in different situations.

Registration Itself Doesn't Require Any Documents
First, distinguish between two concepts: registration and identity verification.
When registering a Binance account, you only need an email address or phone number, set a password, and verify through a verification code. This step doesn't require any documents at all — whether or not you have a passport doesn't matter.
Documents are needed for the subsequent identity verification (KYC) step. KYC stands for Know Your Customer — essentially, the platform needs to confirm who you are. After completing KYC, you can access features like deposits, trading, and withdrawals.
So strictly speaking, can you register on Binance without a passport? Of course. Can you complete identity verification without a passport? Yes, as long as you have other accepted documents.
Chinese Mainland Users Can Use a National ID Card
The Chinese mainland resident ID card is an accepted document type on Binance. For the vast majority of Chinese users, using an ID card for KYC verification is the most convenient choice.
The process is simple:
On the identity verification page, select your country/region as "China," then choose the document type as "ID Card."
Next, photograph the front side of your ID card (the side with your photo and name) and the back side (the side with the issuing authority and validity period). Make sure the photos are clear with all four corners visible.
Finally, complete facial recognition. Face your phone's front camera and follow the prompts to blink, turn your head, and so on.
If everything goes smoothly, the entire process takes just a few minutes. Once approved, your account is ready for normal use.
Can You Use a Driver's License
This depends on your country and region. In some countries and regions, Binance accepts driver's licenses as identity verification documents. However, for Chinese mainland users, Chinese driver's licenses are typically not on the supported documents list.
If you live overseas and hold a locally issued driver's license, check the verification page for a driver's license option. Some countries' driver's licenses are accepted as valid ID because they include photos and complete personal information.
What Documents Do Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan Users Use
Hong Kong users can use the Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID) for verification — this is the most common method. Of course, a passport can also be used.
Taiwan users can use the ROC National ID Card or a Taiwan passport. The ID card is the more convenient choice since most Taiwan residents have one.
Macau users can use the Macau Resident Identity Card.
In short, regardless of the region, as long as you have a valid identity document issued by the local government, you can generally complete Binance's KYC verification.
What Documents Do Overseas Chinese Use
If you're a Chinese person living overseas long-term, it's recommended to use documents issued by your country of residence for verification. For example, if you have a green card or U.S. driver's license in the United States, select "United States" as your country during verification and submit the corresponding document.
If you only have a Chinese ID card but are located overseas, you can also select "China" and verify with your ID card. However, note that the country/region information you provide should roughly match your IP address location — large discrepancies may trigger the platform's risk controls.
Of course, if you have both a Chinese passport and a local document, either works — just choose whichever is most convenient.
Does a Temporary ID Card Work
If your ID card is being replaced and you only have a temporary ID card, can you use it for verification?
Based on past user experience, the approval rate for temporary ID cards is relatively low. Because the format of temporary ID cards differs from regular ID cards, Binance's automatic recognition system may not correctly read the information.
If you only have a temporary ID card, try submitting it once. If it doesn't pass, wait for your regular ID card to be issued before resubmitting, or contact customer service to explain the situation and see if there are alternative solutions.
Does a Household Registration Book Work
No. Binance does not accept household registration books (hukou) as identity verification documents. Although it's an official document, it doesn't include a photo (at least not as a standardized photo ID) and the format isn't widely recognized internationally.
Other documents that are also not accepted include student IDs, social security cards, and employee IDs. While these contain personal information, they don't qualify as internationally recognized identity documents.
What If Your Document Is About to Expire
If your ID card or other document is about to expire (e.g., less than three months remaining), it's recommended to renew it promptly and complete verification after receiving the new document.
While theoretically any document still within its validity period can be submitted, the review system may be stricter with documents nearing expiration. Additionally, if the document expires after verification and you need to re-verify your identity later, you'll have to go through the process again.
Using a document with a long remaining validity period is the most hassle-free approach.
What If You Have No Documents at All
If you truly have no documents — no ID card, no passport, no driver's license — then you indeed cannot complete Binance's KYC verification. This isn't unique to Binance; any compliant financial platform requires valid identification.
In this situation, resolve the document issue first. Visit your local public security bureau (for mainland users) or relevant government agency to apply for an ID card. Once you have a document, come back to register and verify.
Summary
Not having a passport doesn't affect your ability to register and use Binance at all. Chinese mainland users can use a national ID card, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan users can use their local ID cards, and overseas Chinese can use identity documents from their country of residence. A passport is just one of many options, not the only one.
Once you've confirmed you have a suitable document, you can go register. Follow the process step by step — verification with an ID card typically takes just a few minutes.
